Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (22/09/2025 - 19/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to develop specific skills in linguistic analysis of performing arts texts and to refine a critical-philological sensitivity. Outline a history of Italian used in film, illustrating its main articulations and varieties.

Course Prerequisites

It is advisable to have taken at least one Italian linguistics exam in the three-year degree course. Those who are not in this condition will have to agree on a bibliographic supplement with the teacher.

Teaching Methods

Lectures and seminar activities.

Assessment Methods

Oral exam and personal essay (on a topic to be agreed with the teacher).

The ORAL exam aims to assess the educational content, skills, and critical thinking abilities acquired by the student. With this in mind, the exam will be structured in two parts and will include:
1) discussion of personal essay;
2) questions about the exam program, selected readings and films.

The final version of the ESSAY must be sent by mail to the teacher at least one week before the exam date.
More precise indications for the writing of the essay will be provided in class and published on Kiro.

Texts

1. Fabio Rossi, "Lingua italiana e cinema. Nuova edizione", Roma, Carocci, 2023.

2. Giuseppe Patota e Fabio Rossi (a cura di), "L’italiano al cinema, l’italiano nel cinema", Firenze, Accademia della Crusca, 2017, pp. 49-87.

3. All materials and texts discussed during the course.

4. It is also expected the knowledge of three studies chosen from those that will be uploaded on Kyro (in the section entitled "Saggistica per l'esame") and seven films chosen from those indicated in the reference list that will be provided in class and published on Kiro. Of course, of these films, the student must be able to analyze first and foremost the linguistic choices.

Non-attending students will replace point 3 with the following bibliography:

3.2 Sergio Raffaelli, "Parole di film. Studi cinematografici 1961-2010", edited by M. Fanfani, Florence, Cesati, 2005, four essays to be chosen.

3.1 Claudio Giovanardi, Pietro Trifone, "La lingua del teatro", Bologna, il Mulino, 2015, three chapters to be chosen from the first part ("Profilo linguistico") and three from the second ("Antologia di testi commentati").

3.3 Italo Calvino, "Autobiografia di uno spettatore", in Federico Fellini, "Quattro film", Torino, Einaudi, 1974, pp. IX-XXIV.

Contents

The course will be divided into two parts.
1. Methodological framework and focus on some preliminary questions: the characteristics of natural speech and the logic of its functioning in a situation; representations and stylizations of orality; the "question of language" in the Italian theatrical and filmic tradition; philological problems posed by the texts for the stage and for the screen.
2. Synthetic overview of the evolution of the language of Italian cinema from silent captions to the present day. Analysis and discussion of a corpus of selected texts that allows you to illustrate some of the main varieties of cinematographic Italian and to touch on some specific themes: the relationships between literature, theater and cinema; the different filmic textualities (subject, treatment, screenplay, découpage, etc.); the genres of Italian cinema ("white telephones", neorealism, Italian comedy, spaghetti-western, etc.); the linguistic identification of the characters; the uses of the dialect; the multilingual representations; the problems of dubbing.
