The course provides students with the fundamental notions to study and analyse the Russian lexicon and its changes during the XX century. Students will be able to identify and to analyse the lexical and morphological peculiarities of the Russian language of the XX century (in particular, the language of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s). The course reflects on the tight relation among language, society, culture and politics in the Soviet Union.

Teaching Methods
The course format consists of lectures and Power Point presentation. During the course multimedia material will be used: cartoons, films, songs and readings.
Assessment Methods
The oral exam will assess the students' knowledge of the course contents.

The course offers an overview of the linguistic (mostly lexical) changes of the Russian language in the XX century giving particular attention to the post-revolutionary period and the World War II period. The first part of the course is devoted to the introduction of the basic notions useful for the analysis of those processes of word formation (slovoobrazovatel’nye processy) active in the Russian language of the XX century. The second part of the course is devoted to the analysis of linguistic, mainly lexical, changes in the Russian language of the ‘20s, ‘30s and ‘40s. The historical and cultural aspects will also be discussed.
