Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course is intended to impart basic knowledge of the history of the German language and the German-speaking cultural area in the social, political and literary environment of the theatre. Diachronic aspects of the language of theatre and its analogue forms of expression, especially from the beginning of the 20th century to the present, are integrated in the discussion. After an introduction to the anthropology of performative play and a subsequent brief overview of the history of European and German-language theatre, changes in language and style are examined on the basis of representative texts, especially under aesthetic, syntactic and lexical as well as socio-lectual and socio-intellectual aspects. The text analyses are accompanied by the reading and discussion of current contributions to theatre theory.

Course Prerequisites

Prerequisites are a basic knowledge of German and an interest in the history of European theatre.
The individual lectures and the subsequent discussions are held partly in Italian and partly in German, with examinations in German or Italian, depending on the students' wishes.

Teaching Methods

The course combines elements of frontal and interactive didactics.

Assessment Methods

Included in the course program are student presentations. The presentations are compulsory for all participants of the course and are recognised as part of the examinations. The texts relevant to the examination are listed in the present dispensation.

Texts

The texts are made available on KIRO.
