Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide solid knowledge of the structural, lexical, and rhetorical specificities of the Russian language, with particular reference to advertising language. At the end of the course, students will be able to analyze both the form and the content of an advertisement and will be able to recognize the linguistic devices used in this kind of discourse for persuasive purposes. With regards to language skills, the course activities (both corso docente and didattica integrativa CEL) aim to deepen the knowledge of Russian and the active and passive skills acquired in the previous course of study and to refine their use (Level B2+/C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). In particular, the course aims to explore grammatical and lexical issues that are normally omitted from the BA degree program, and to strengthen translation skills.

Course Prerequisites

The course is intended for students with at least a B1+/B2 level of Russian according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Teaching Methods

The course consists of lectures (modulo docente, 36 hours) and year-long practical language classes (didattica integrativa, 2 hours/week) taught by CEL (Collaboratore e esperto linguistico) Dr. Irina Pavlova.

Assessment Methods

Written preparatory tests and oral exam.
The written preparatory exam consists of:
- Written exercises aimed at testing the grammatical and lexical skills practiced during the lessons (of both corso docente and attività integrativa CEL).
- Written analysis of advertisements, based on classwork
Once the preliminary written exam has been passed, students can take the oral exam.
The oral exam consists of:
- Oral presentation in Russian (and related PowerPoint) of the analysis of advertisements previously selected with the teacher.
- Discussion of grammatical and lexical topics (those covered during the course and CEL practical lessons)
- Brief discussion in Russian on topics covered during CEL classes
Students who regularly attend classes (Corso docente) may take a part of the written exam (written analysis of advertisements) and a part of the oral exam (oral presentation in Russian with related PowerPoint of the analysis of advertisements) during the teacher's course.
In addition, students who attend at least 70% of the CEL practical lessons may take the grammatical/lexical written preliminary test during the midterm exams at the end of May.
Students are not allowed to sit the final oral exam unless they have previously passed the written preparatory tests (written grammatical/lexical test and written analysis of advertisements).
If passed, the preparatory exams are valid for 13 months.
For any procedural clarifications, students can contact the course instructor (email: erica.pinelli@unipv.it).
Students who do not attend the lectures or are in one of the situations referred to the document "Didattica innovativa"(Allegato A: https://portale.unipv.it/sites/default/files/2023-07/Didattica_Innovativa_Allegato_A.pdf) are invited to contact the lecturer.

Contents

The course aims to provide students with skills in analyzing advertising language as well as to deepen their knowledge of Russian language.
The course is divided into two parts.
The first part of the course, conducted entirely in Russian, will focus on the study and analysis of advertising language and discourse. After a historical introduction to advertising texts and discourse in Russia, we will focus on the linguistic peculiarities of this type of persuasive discourse, on rhetorical figures and word plays used to attract the attention of the target audience.
The second part of the course, conducted partly in Russian and partly in Italian, is aimed at strengthening linguistic skills and, in particular, is dedicated to topics that are normally overlooked in BA programs. Grammatical topics such as negative pronouns, adjectives and adverbs, as well as connectives in complex sentences will be covered. In addition, some lexical issues that usually raise several doubts among learners of Russian as a foreign language will be explored in depth. In particular, we will focus on prefixed verbs (such as vygovorit’, zagovorit’, ugovorit’, otgovorit’, etc.), on near-synonyms (for example, razbit’ vs slomat’) and on paronyms (for example, osobyj vs osobennyj). The course includes practical language lessons which are held during the whole academic year by Dr. Irina Pavlova (CEL).
