Syllabus

Course Objectives

The main objective of the course is to offer knowledge and orientation in the field of Sports Psychology and Mental Training.
The secondary objective is to introduce and experiment to students the methods and areas of application of the contents and methods learned.
Learning outcomes learned.
At the end of the course students will have:
a) learned and understood the key concepts of Sports Psychology and Mental Training
b) acquired basic knowledge on the following conceptual domains: peak performance, flow, motivation, emotional management, emotional psychophysiology, psychological empowerment, mental training techniques and application methods.

Course Prerequisites

The SPORT PSYCHOLOGY course presupposes the general notions of psychology with particular reference to the theories concerning the constructs of cognitive evaluation, motivation, self-efficacy, psychological empowerment and the neurophysiological aspects that underlie the emotional experience.

Teaching Methods

In accordance with the University Guidelines on the teaching delivery methods in the academic year. 2023/2024, the course takes place through lessons that can be attended in person on scheduled dates and times and includes the possibility of consulting the slides or other teaching material from the KIRO university platform.

Assessment Methods

Learning will be verified through a written exam consisting of 61 multiple choice questions.
The outcome of the exam will be calculated by summing the answers, 0.5 points will be assigned to each correct answer and 0 points to each incorrect answer.

The theoretical reference material for learning the contents of the course can be found in the lecture notes made available to students in the section dedicated to teaching on the KIRO moodle platform.

Contents

The course will be structured approximately in 18 interactive lessons in which some key concepts of Sports Psychology and the practice of Mental Training will be illustrated and specific methods and techniques of this practice will be explored in depth to allow students to understand their specific role in relation to sports performance and to personal well-being.
Neuroscientific concepts will be exposed regarding the balance of the central nervous system and the neurophysiology of emotions and psychology topics regarding motivation, psychological empowerment, perceptions of the Self, cognitive style, self-efficacy and cognitive evaluation.
Some Mental Training techniques such as Progressive Relaxation, Visualization, Self Coherence and Mindfulness will also be illustrated, in order to fully understand their application possibilities.
The entire course will be carried out giving particular importance to the dialogue and interaction between teacher and students.
The contents of the Sports Psychology course will be addressed taking into consideration the ethical-deontological principles which, based on the specific theme, will be described in detail by the teacher, both from a theoretical point of view and with a direct connection to practical activity (e.g. through the discussion of example cases)
