Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course the student must:
- know and be able to apply the principles of thermodynamics to real situations drawn from the world of pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmacology, biology and medicine;
- know how to read and understand the description sheet of any chemical substance (state of aggregation, melting and boiling points, enthalpies and characteristic transition free energies);
- know how to make calculations related to chemical and chemical-physical equilibrium, predicting the state of aggregation of substances and drawing the relative phase diagram (solid - liquid, liquid - vapour, with one or two components);
- know how to make calculations related to chemical kinetics and enzymatic kinetics.

Course Prerequisites

Chemistry: states of aggregation of matter; chemical properties and physical properties; fundamental laws of chemistry; fundamental laws of ideal gases; atoms and molecules, atomic weight and molecular weight; atomic structure; fundamental subatomic particles; electronic configuration of the elements and periodic table; periodic properties; The chemical bond: atomic orbitals and molecular orbitals. Chemical nomenclature: acids, bases, salts. Basic principles of organic chemistry and nomenclature of alkanes, alkenes, alcohols.
Mathematical analysis: concepts of: function (also with several variables), limit, derivative, integral. Calculation: powers of 10, equivalences.
Physics: measurement of physical quantities and measurement units, conversion factors between quantities, fundamental principles and equations of mechanics, principle of conservation of energy.

Teaching Methods

Teaching is based on both lectures and guided problems solving in the classroom. For carrying out the frontal lessons, Power Point presentations are used, made available to the students in the section dedicated to teaching on the moodle KIRO platform. Guided problem solving is performed using the whiteboard and/or a graphics tablet. Each single step is illustrated to the students and discussed with them to verify their understanding of the related covered topics . Similar exercises are uploaded to the Kilo platform in pdf format for students to practice. The solutions are provided on separate files. The face-to-face tutoring serves as a support to this activity. For students with specific needs, who cannot attend teaching activities in person and who have applied for Inclusive Teaching Modality, adequate teaching material will be available for fruitful independent study. If requested, self-learning can be supported by tutoring or supplementary teaching activities, and by dedicated meetings, including online ones, with time flexibility depending on needs.

Assessment Methods

The learning verification will take place individually in a mixed form: the first part will be conducted orally and will consist of open questions relating to the entire program of the course, with particular attention to the principles of thermodynamics, the concept of chemical equilibrium and the kinetic laws; the second part will be conducted as written part and will consist in the resolution of problems taken from the world of pharmaceutical chemistry and biology relating to the application of the thermodynamic and kinetic laws studied during the course and in the reproduction of one or more phase diagrams with the relative thermodynamic description. The oral part lasts 30 minutes, the written part 45 minutes. The use of the periodic table and the calculator is permitted. The evaluation of the test is carried out in thirtieths. Appropriate examination methods are provided for students belonging to the categories of Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) and Special Educational Needs (SEN).

Texts

The slides provided in power point by the teacher constitute a solid basis for the preparation of the course, together with the exercises made available in pdf format.
The recommended texts are:
