The aim of the course is to investigate the aspects of taking charge of the patient with respiratory disease. The student will learn theoretical and practical knowledge related to respiratory rehabilitation. The expected results are as follows: - to communicate effectively during the interview for the medical history collection - to know the tests and the scales (applicable in acute and/or chronic phase) for the assessment of the respiratory function. - to apply the tests and the scales for the assessment of the respiratory function also in order to estimate duration, severity, characteristic pattern and factors associated with characteristic symptoms: dyspnea, cough, sputum, respiratory sounds and chest pain - to analyze the collected data and to identify the patient’s problems. - to develop an adequate and safe rehabilitation program based on the evaluation, identifying targets, timing and results. - to carry out the therapeutic intervention, changing it according to the context and variations over time
Course Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of the anatomy and the physiology of the respiratory system.
Teaching Methods
Lectures with projection of images on Power-Point, slides are provided for students. Complementary: classroom discussion about case reports and video tutorial.
Assessment Methods
To assess students' learning: written test with True/ False questions, multiple choice and open questions. Duration: 90 minutes Assessment: 30th. Multiple choice questions have only one correct answer. Open questions include the description of one or more functional tests, the analysis of a brief case report or require to explain a given rehabilitation treatment.

Contents
Evaluation of the subjective condition of the patient suffering from cardiovascular and/or respiratory problems: conducting an interview regarding the most significant symptoms: dyspnoea, cough, sputum, respiratory sounds and chest pain Objective evaluation of the state of consciousness and vital signs, execution and interpretation of cardiopulmonary function tests. Identification of problems relevant to rehabilitation treatment and their causes (such as airway clearance deficit, lung expansion deficit, ventilatory limitation, muscle deconditioning, joint pain, immobilization). Treatment planning: lung re-expansion programs, global, peripheral muscle and/or respiratory muscle exercise training programs Definition of short/long-term objectives of the rehabilitation program and the times for achieving them, consistently with the diagnosis and functional assessment carried out, taking into account the priorities assigned
