Syllabus

Course Objectives

The main teaching objective is to provide an understanding of the peculiar aspects that characterize diseases in the pediatric setting.

The expected learning outcomes are as follows:

- Knowledge of the main diseases of pediatric interest
- Understanding of the elements characterizing pediatric diseases, identifying the main differences from adult diseases
- Knowledge of specific medical language
- Ability to apply the acquired knowledge in the recognition and interpretation of the main pathological pictures of pediatric interest

Course Prerequisites

In order to understand the course topics, the student is required to know the introductory notions of medical semeiotics. In particular, the student must know the concepts of medical history and physical examination; the main laboratory tests and instrumental tests; the concepts of diagnosis and prognosis.

Teaching Methods

The course is organized into face-to-face lectures, delivered through PowerPoint presentations projected on the screen, and in-depth lectures using the electronic white board. The PowerPoint presentations allow students to learn the essential elements of Pediatrics, necessary to achieve the educational objectives of the course. The lectures are made available to students.
Pediatric clinical cases are also presented in the classroom during the course in order to apply the knowledge gained and develop clinical reasoning.

Assessment Methods

The examination consists of an individual oral test designed to ascertain the skills acquired relative to the course content. The test covers at least two separate topics related to pathologies of pediatric interest covered during the course. The final grade is based on the degree of depth and understanding of the topics presented and the ability to integrate the knowledge acquired during the course.

Lectures will cover all the topics included in the syllabus. Those interested in further study of the elements of Essential Pediatrics may refer to the following text:
"Pediatria essenziale. Trattato di clinica e terapia". Burgio et al. Edi Ermes; 5° edizione.
