Course Objectives

At the end of the activities proposed in the second year, the student will be able to:

In the PREVENTION AREA:

Identify potentially harmful situations for their own physical integrity during internship activities, particularly in patient management, and recognize potential risks for patients.
Implement primary prevention techniques for musculoskeletal issues for themselves and patients, utilizing appropriate basic techniques for positioning, movements, and transfers.
Apply principles of hygiene and safety under the guidance of the tutor in all internship situations, especially during patient care (self-care, meals, transfers/positioning).
Monitor major vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate) and identify pathological signs and symptoms (pallor, sweating) in patients when indicated.
In the CARE AND REHABILITATION AREA:

Identify all stages of the physiotherapeutic process, understanding correlations among different stages and interpreting their significance.
Collect data (clinical history related to structural, functional, activity, and participation aspects, contextual factors (personal and environmental), according to the ICF classification) from patients encountered during internship experiences, using semi-structured history-taking tools and/or patient and other reference figure interviews (in agreement with the tutor).
Conduct physiotherapeutic assessment safely, without contraindications and risks, through observation and physical examination of adult, elderly, and developmental age patients with neurological and orthopedic pathologies (acute and degenerative).
Apply validated procedures and tools recognized by the scientific community, completing appropriate paper-based and/or computerized documentation instruments.
Analyze collected data and information to define the degree of functional limitation in activities and participation, determining residual functional abilities in relevant contexts for the individual (home, school, work environment, hobbies, leisure).
Identify the patient's main problems and intervention priorities (guided), linking strengths and weaknesses.
Describe the functional physiotherapeutic diagnosis based on processed data, especially for patients with neurological and orthopedic pathologies.
Propose predictable outcomes (functional outcomes) for adult patients (guided), considering all limitations that may affect their achievement.
Contribute to formulating the rehabilitation project for adult patients, outlining a hypothesis of physiotherapeutic intervention program based on efficacy evidence.
Formulate treatment objectives guided by SMART principles (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound) with the tutor's agreement.
Set up and perform therapeutic exercises efficiently and safely for patients and themselves, following internship settings.
In the THERAPEUTIC EDUCATION AREA:

Identify educational needs for assisted persons and caregivers guided by the tutor.
Formulate proposals for therapeutic education interventions (maintaining correct posture, using aids, wheelchair management, acquiring autonomy for movements/transfers, caring for plegic upper limbs, proposing home exercises to promote functional recovery).
In the TRAINING/SELF-TRAINING AREA:

Contribute to identifying and defining internship training objectives in the training and internship site and plan activities to achieve them.
Seek and accept feedback, engaging in a process of self-assessment and evaluation of internship experiences.
In the EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE (EBP) AREA:

When choosing treatment or facing a clinical problem, research, retrieve, evaluate, and consider the best scientific evidence, comparing them with available clinical experiences, patient needs, and requests.
In the PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY AREA:

Demonstrate adherence to ethical principles and correctness in language and actions (code of ethics and confidentiality) in all stages of the training path towards all individuals encountered.
Recognize problematic situations and consult competent individuals before acting, taking responsibility for actions and their consequences.
In the MANAGEMENT/LEADERSHIP AREA:

Formulate hypotheses for internship day planning, consulting with the tutor on activity decisions, considering patient, tutor, and service organization needs.
Demonstrate openness to feedback from individuals encountered, identifying and respecting professions, roles, and responsibilities in the internship and training site context.
Propose planning activities for student's own year, considering organizational and regulatory constraints governing activities.
In the COMMUNICATION - RELATIONSHIP AREA:

Demonstrate active listening skills, adapting verbal and non-verbal communication strategies (guided by the tutor).
Care for communication and relationships in all contexts, towards internship tutors, coordinators, coursemates, other professionals, modulating verbal and non-verbal communication.
This comprehensive set of competencies ensures that the student is well-prepared to navigate various aspects of physiotherapy practice with competence and professionalism by the end of the second year.

Course Prerequisites

Having completed the first-year internship and passed the exam with at least 18 out of 30 points

Teaching Methods

The student must attend the agreed internship sites for a total of 550 hours.

Assessment Methods

Second-year assessment will consist of the following:

The arithmetic mean of the three evaluations will constitute 50% of the total assessment.
Presentation of a clinical case and questions from the commission regarding second-year items will constitute the remaining 50%.
Evaluation will be conducted by the assistant in the internship and the tutor at the site.
Internship Exam: The case report will follow CARE guidelines for reporting.
A case report is a narrative description of a clinical case for clinical, scientific, or educational purposes.
It describes a clinical case in a narrative manner, including clinical presentation, patient characteristics, diagnoses, interventions, outcomes (including adverse events), and follow-up.
The narrative should include the rationale for conclusions and key lessons from the clinical case.
CLINICAL CASE: Comprehensive patient data collection, appropriate use of assessment scales, correct formulation of the prioritized physiotherapeutic diagnosis, coherent formulation of goals/outcomes for the patient, and outcome indicators, explanation of interventions and their justifications. The candidate must demonstrate clinical reasoning and critical thinking skills. 10 minutes will be allotted for the case presentation.
In the remaining 5 minutes, the commission may inquire about second-year items.

Contents

At the second year, the student has acquired theoretical knowledge and is preparing to undertake clinical training activities with specific patient-focused objectives. Here is a summary of the acquired competencies:

Etiological and pathophysiological bases of major neurological, orthopedic, and rheumatological pathologies:

In the adult and developmental age group.
For the elderly, to hypothesize specific physiotherapy projects and programs.
Neurological conditions post-stroke and with degenerative neurological diseases.
Application of physiotherapy process:

Oriented towards individuals with limitations in structures, functions, activities, and participation due to neurological and musculoskeletal system alterations.
Etiological and pathophysiological bases:

Of major orthopedic and cardio-respiratory pathologies.
Scientific English course:

Successfully completed, enabling comprehension and communication in scientific contexts.
Research design and Evidence-Based Practice (EBP):

Capable of designing simple research studies applying EBP principles, using best available scientific evidence to support clinical decisions.
Communicative dynamics, empathy, and counseling:

Profound understanding of communicative dynamics, empathy, and counseling, both in individual patient contexts and within a team environment.
Clinical training activities:

Engages in clinical activities with specific patient-focused objectives for the first time, requiring guidance from tutors while developing a growing level of initiative in clinical practice.
This set of competencies prepares the student to integrate theory and practice in clinical settings, applying acquired knowledge to deliver effective evidence-based physiotherapy, while maintaining empathetic and communicative approaches with patients and interdisciplinary teams.
