Course Objectives
The second-year nursing internship offers a learning environment designed to develop critical thinking skills in: a) defining and identifying priority health and social care issues in a public health context; b) applying research design and methodological skills to the development of the internship project.
• Students must be able to apply and understand the methodology for formulating/identifying research problems and objectives in a specific professional field characterizing the profile of the master's graduate (research, education, management). (Knowledge and understanding)
• Students must be able to apply their methodological knowledge to the development of research projects in collaboration with their supervisor. (ability to apply knowledge and understanding)
• The student must be able to carry out individual work and critically revise the project phases envisaged in the research project (ability to make independent judgments).
• The student must achieve good communication and presentation skills regarding the results of the research conducted. The student's presentation/communication skills (written and/or oral) may be assessed in both Italian and English. (communication skills)
• The student must develop an aptitude for research processes and the use of critical thinking skills, such as reflective, flexible processes that require continuity of work throughout the entire duration of the project. Furthermore, the student will develop teamwork skills, learning to collaborate within research groups. (learning skills)

Course Prerequisites
The internship requires students to possess design and methodological skills and knowledge.
Specifically, students must possess the knowledge needed to understand research designs, formulate appropriate
research questions related to priority nursing and midwifery care issues, and possess analytical and design skills for planning work phases and analyzing/revising scientific evidence. Specifically, the content of the modules on Preparatory Sciences, THEORIES AND PHILOSOPHIES OF NURSING-MIDWIFERY SCIENCES, Research Methodology, PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT OF HEALTHCARE EDUCATION SYSTEMS, and METHODOLOGY FOR EVIDENCE-BASED NURSING-MIDWIFERY PRACTICE are essential for acquiring the skills necessary for the internship.

Teaching Methods
Achieving the educational objectives will be ensured through the following activities:
• Orientation activities for the internship experience, starting in the second year of the program.
• Seminars and in-depth study activities within and/or outside the university. Regarding the program, the teaching seminars ("other activities") are updated annually, also in English. Students may also participate in extracurricular activities (e.g., workshops, conferences) relevant to the research focus of the internship experience. These activities enrich students' knowledge and stimulate critical thinking.
• Scheduling of individual meetings (in person and/or remotely) with the relevant tutor, designed to support the preparation, review, and reflection of the experiences.
• Individual review/study activities using the training/operational tools provided, such as the concept map (see version 1, effective September 12, 2025).
• Field exercises (if data is collected in operational work contexts).
• Group work with students to explore common thematic areas.
In this regard, please refer to the "Internship Hours Recording Form" as a useful tool for recording teaching methods and activities carried out during the internship experience.

Assessment Methods
At the end of the internship, students must produce a paper in one of the following formats: scientific paper (in the form of a full scientific article, research protocol, and/or abstract), or design paper (in the form of a project form). Additionally, students must submit an individual report, as a tool for evaluating the learning process and the critical reflection strategies implemented and tested during the internship. A self-assessment is also planned to analyze the quality and level of satisfaction perceived by students with the internship experience, using the "Self-assessment of the Internship Experience" tool.
Depending on the type of work submitted (scientific paper, design paper), evaluation guidelines have been developed to guide the internship committee's final assessment.
Type of paper: Scientific work (full scientific article, research and/or review protocol, abstract)
1. Thematic relevance and relevance
2. Clear definition of the problem, objective, and research question
3. Definition of the study design
4. Correct use of bibliography
5. Logical consistency of the writing approach and terminological consistency (with reference to the dissemination target of the work)
Type of paper: Design work (new development and/or evaluation)
1. Context analysis
2. Clear definition of the problem and design objective
3. Definition of the design phases and related indicators
4. Correct use of bibliography
5. Logical consistency of the writing approach and terminological consistency
Each of the above evaluation criteria will be assessed with a Likert scale score between 1 (completely insufficient) and 5 (completely sufficient), for a score between 6 and 30. The final score will be communicated to the student as a grade:
- Insufficient: 6 to 17
Sufficient: 18 to 21
• Good: 22 to 24
• Distinguished: 25 to 27
• Excellent: 28 to 30 (no honors)
For both types of papers, a common criterion (sixth criterion) is used for assessment and evaluation by the supervisor/lecturer.

Contents
Second-year students in the Master's Degree Program in Nursing and Midwifery Sciences are required to complete an annual internship worth 30 credits (see the full text of the teaching regulations, Article 12, and the link provided).
In a second-level, specialist, or master's degree program, the internship, even more so than in undergraduate studies, is an opportunity to refine and explore topics with professional development goals. Students will be accompanied and guided by a tutor, chosen from among the faculty members. This tutor will be an expert in the topic chosen by the student based on their interests and professional motivations. This tutor will enable them to experience the application of managerial, professional, basic/continuing training, and research methodologies in their specific professional field of nursing and midwifery. The training activity is carried out in collaboration with the student and is conducted in one of the areas listed above, based on clinical care priorities chosen by the student. The thematic areas that students choose to explore and develop for their internship experience refer to fundamental concepts, that is, abstract theoretical elements that are transferable to different practical contexts and disciplinary fields, which form the basis for the development and definition of the training curriculum. These concepts are therefore latently linked to the content of the core courses of the program. The concepts, grouped into the macro-areas provided by the curriculum (managerial, clinical-professional, and research methodology), represent a practical guide for students, from which to begin the critical-reflective process needed to define their internship project.
