Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims at obtaining basic microbiological knowledge (morphology, growth ability, virulence factors and bacterial genetics), both for opportunistic pathogenic bacteria and for pathogenic pathogens.
The main microorganisms of clinical interest and involved in the development of nosocomial infections will be introduced.
The student will acquire the tools to assess the importance of the pathogen in relation to the host.
Moreover, the course aims to provide:
- knowledge on the proper management of the biological sample;
- adequate specific knowledge of methods for evaluation of correct antibiotic susceptibility;
- knowledge on the main methods of bacterial identification.
At the end of the course the student is expected to have achieved the necessary knowledge to apply a correct and effective diagnostic process.

Contents

Epidemiological aspects of infectious diseases.
The bacterial cell, basic components and accessory components (bacterial sporulation).
Normal bacterial flora.
Host-parasitic interaction and pathogenesis of infectious diseases.
Antibiotic and antibiotic-resistance.
General characters of bacteria of medical interest, with particular attention to staphylococci, streptococci and enterobacteria, micobacteria, Pseudomonas spp., Acinetobacter spp. e Legionella spp., will be treated regarding: pathogenic action, clinical manifestations, laboratory diagnosis.
In particular, will be described the sampling methods (from various patient’s anatomical sites) for microbiological analysis and storage. Will be included: sample acceptability and processing priority, bacterial count, direct and indirect identification methods (microscopy, culture, manual / automated and molecular systems; serology). Innovations in the field of bacterial identification: automated systems, mass spectrometry, molecular methods, in vitro methods for antimicrobial activity evaluation (antibiogram, MIC by broth micro-dilution and MBC). Methods for ESBL and/or cabapenemase production confirmation (synergy tests, disk combination tests).
