The objective of the course is the acquisition by students : - of in-depth knowledge of the functioning mechanisms of European Union law, in order to be able to interpret even the most recent developments of the integration process - of the ability to reason critically through the use of the categories developed by the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union - of the ability, through written exercises carried out in class, to apply the acquired knowledge to the solution of concrete cases drawn from practice.
Course Prerequisites
Knowledge of the fundamental principles of international law and in particular of the law of treaties.
Teaching Methods
Frontal lessons supported by slides and materials published on Kiro. The course also includes one workshop credit. The workshop will consist of written exercises involving the solution of practical cases drawn from the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union.
Assessment Methods
Oral interviews aimed at verifying the knowledge of the institutional part and the special part of the course. In relation to the latter, in particular, knowledge of the most important judgments of the Court of Justice on freedom of movement will be required. For students who have acquired workshop credit, the freedom of movement part of the examination will focus on the discussion of the issues covered by the exercises.

The course is divided into an institutional part and a special part. The subject of the institutional part will be the study of the institutional structure of the European Union with particular attention to the rules of the Treaty and the contribution made to the development of European Union law by the case law of the Court of Justice and the General Court, on the one hand, and to the effectiveness of European Union law within the systems of the Member States and the relationship between Union law and national law, on the other. The subject of the special section will be the study of the freedoms of movement provided for in the Treaty.
