Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with the linguistic tools suitable for developing English communicative competence in the political and social sciences, with particular emphasis on the use of appropriate language for academic communication contexts. In particular, during the English Language 1 course, we will work on improving comprehension of specialised texts (reading, listening, summary of key points), as well as on the production of texts that are stylistically suited to the academic and professional contexts. Furthermore, the study of English language phonology will be introduced.

During the English 2 course, you will continue to work on improving comprehension and critical analysis skills for specialised texts, and at the same time you will develop oral skills in order to be able to clearly express opinions and effectively interact in the academic and professional fields.

Course Prerequisites

While there are no mandatory prerequisites, a good level of competence in English would maximize the learning experience. During the first semester students are required to attend grammar classes taught by mother-tongue teachers to brush up on their language skills and get ready to attend the official course in the second semester.

Teaching Methods

The course is taught through frontal lectures, in which the active participation of the students is strongly encouraged. PowerPoint presentations will be used to both introduce and provide examples of the theories taught during the course. Analysis of authentic texts taken from a range of sources will be used to reinforce the theories presented so as to provide an integrated learning experience.
At the beginning of the first semester, students will take a placement test and will be divided into groups based on their level. During the first and second semester students will attend grammar classes taught by mother- tongue teachers to brush up on their language skills and get ready to attend the official course in the second semester. Both first and second year students are required to take the placement test.

Inclusive teaching modalities: students holding a certificate complying with the University regulations (https://portale.unipv.it/it/didattica/servizi-lo-studente/modalita-didattiche-inclusive) will be granted up to two online office hours per week in addition to information about materials for preparing the exam autonomously.

Assessment Methods

The English exam (12 CFUs) is divided into three parts: at the end of the first year, students will take a written exam consisting of grammar, reading comprehension, and phonetics exercises, plus open questions related to the official course. At the end of the second year, students will take a grammar test and then an oral examination. The final mark corresponds to the average of the three partial marks, and it is recorded in the student's transcript.
Tutors are available to help students revise before an exam. Please check the Department's website for tutoring meetings.
For students who are enrolled in their 3rd year: it is not possible to take the English 1 and English 2 written tests together on the same day, but it is possible to take them in the same session.
Grammar assessment expire every year in September.
