Syllabus

Course Objectives

The workshop aims at providing students with some tools to orient themselves in the world of work and professions, introduce them to the knowledge of the communication professions and their recent transformations, and to explore some organisational, cultural, ethical and practical aspects of these professions.

Course Prerequisites

None

Teaching Methods

The first part (Module 1), covering the first few weeks of the course, consists of lectures followed by classroom discussions.
Module 2 includes a lecture-based section in which the lecturer provides a range of useful tools for decoding the main stylistic features that characterise public discourse. At the end of the first lecture-based section, a collaborative process begins: students engage with the lecturer and their peers in applying and using these tools. This allows them to experiment with and refine the skills they have learnt in real time.
Students will be required to identify a ‘communication product’ – a news item, trend, controversy or similar – and present its characteristics in a presentation, which may be group-based, lasting no longer than 10 minutes.
The presentation must be booked by sending the materials to the lecturer and will be assessed alongside the final assignment.
Module 3 comprises lectures that will alternate with talks by external guests (professionals in Communication, Institutional Relations and PR).

Assessment Methods

For modules 1 and 3, the assessment takes the form of a single multiple-choice test.
For module 2, a written assignment in which a false news story is created must be submitted no later than 10 days before the exam date. The story must contain elements of credibility and recognisability, and must draw on the cognitive, identity-related and narrative structures discussed in class.

Texts

To take part in the workshop and prepare for the exam, students will have access to various materials:
1) For the first part, the textbook *Il Fenomeno Organizzativo* by Ferrante and Zan, published by Carocci;
2) For the second part, materials provided by the lecturer;
3) For the third part, PDFs of the lectures, which will be uploaded by the lecturer as and when required, and a list of recommended reading available on the course’s Kiro page.

Contents

The workshop is divided into three parts.
In the first part (Module 1), we will explore concepts, tools, information and examples designed to help you understand the world of organisations and work, and to engage with it more effectively, covering the following topics: organisational structure, work and the division of labour, models for integrating different skills, organisational cultures, occupations, professions and changes in the world of work. In the second part (Module 2), the key tools for decoding the main stylistic features that characterise public discourse will be provided.
The third part (Module 3) examines in detail the professional roles within the fields of PR, Public Affairs and Communication, the skills required, the differences between in-house and agency roles, and the interaction between these functions within organisations. Furthermore, numerous examples of communication, PR, advocacy and lobbying campaigns will be illustrated.
