Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (29/09/2025 - 16/01/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The basic concepts of kinematics, dynamics of point masses and particle systems will be introduced in the first semester; the second semester deals with rigid bodies dynamics and statics, as well as thermodynamics. Students will be trained to problem solving with simple applicative exercises. The course emphasizes the importance of understanding basic principles, and encourages the students to affine their analytic and algebraic techniques for solving the proposed exercises.

Course Prerequisites

Those required for admission to the first year of the Bachelor degree in Engineering and for understanding basic notions of Calculus, Geometry and Algebra.

Teaching Methods

Lectures (hours/year in lecture theatre): 20 Practical class (hours/year in lecture theatre): 42 Practicals / Workshops (hours/year in lecture theatre): 0

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a written test in attendance and an oral test at the discretion of the teacher. At the end of the first semester, it is possible to take an exam (interim test) on the program of Module A. Passing the partial test allows you to subsequently participate in a second interim test at the end of the second semester. Passing the interim tests (with an overall grade of at least 18/30) exempts you from the written test and allows you to directly access the oral test (if necessary at the discretion of the teacher). Alternatively, the exam can be taken in full at the end of the course in written form. Failure to pass the oral test requires repeating the exam in full. The written test (partial or complete) involves completing exercises similar to those presented during the course exercises. The oral test is at the discretion of the teacher, but if the student who passed the written exam requests it, it is always possible to also take an oral test. In this case, the exam grade is the weighted average of the written and oral tests. During the oral exam the teacher ensures full understanding of the topics covered during the lectures and exercises. Further details regarding the exam modalities can be found on the KIRO page of the course.
