The aims of the course is to illustrate the concepts and the main technical rules at the base of the design and construction of bridges. A detailed review of the evolution of the bridge construction shows the different structural types. At the end of the course the attendee has the capacity to provide a critical proposal for the possible solutions for the design of a bridge. He is also able to define the main design steps.
Course Prerequisites
The following basic knowledges are required:
Properties of materials - concrete - structural steel
Structural analysis - solving statically determined structures - solving statically not determined structures - basic of f.e.m
Main concepts about structural verification for: - bending moment - shear force - torsion action - instability
Teaching Methods
Lessons and practical exercises
Assessment Methods
Written test on influence lines, pre-stressed and composite deck.
Plus
Oral examination on the remaining topics
