The course provides the knowledge of the philological methods and of the instruments useful for the textual criticism and for the history of tradition, with reference to Italian literary texts, which include those realized in Italy but in a cultural language different from Italian, or realized abroad but in Italian language, from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. At the end of the class, the student will be generally able to comprehend and analyse a critical edition of an Italian literary text, both in the framework of the “filologia della copia” and of the “filologia d’autore”.
Course Prerequisites
A basic humanistic background and a language proficiency in Italian appropriate to the comprehension of literary language are requested. Although it is not necessarily requested, a basic knowledge of Latin could be useful.
Teaching Methods
The course is organized in classroom-taught lessons (66 hours), with the constant interaction of the students. After the first introductory lessons they will be concretely involved in the reading and in the analysis of critical editions (12 hours), especially in what concerns the connection between the text and the critical apparatus. Through telematic connections, the students will have access to the manuscripts and to the ancient printing that hand down the works taken into account during the course.
Assessment Methods
The students will have an oral exam during the sessions following the end of the course. During the oral exam, the student will be asked many questions about the texts studied during the course, to prove the comprehension of the particular philological problems and the ability to analyse critical editions, especially about the connection between the text and the critical apparatus.
