Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims at introducing and discussing the main written sources for ancient art, with particular attention to sculpture and painting. The texts will be read in Italian, but with reference to the original versions. A part of the course will be devoted to the tradition of classical art from the Middle Ages to the Modern Art. Learning outcomes: the course aims to provide specific knowledge in the field of classical art history in relation to its after-life in the medieval and modern period. Students will develop skills in the comparison of different artistic periods and in the ability to relate written sources and artistic production. In these areas, students will develop independent judgement in assessing, on the basis of the knowledge acquired, the impact of classical art on post-antique art. Particular emphasis will be placed on the development of communication skills, with the acquisition of a technical-specialist vocabulary.

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of Greek and Roman art. Some knowledge of Latin is very helpful.

Teaching Methods

The course is delivered in blended mode and is divided into three parts: 18 hours of lectures by the teacher, with extensive use of images (through the projection of various PowerPoint presentations, which will be provided to students); 4-6 hours of interactive online lessons (a useful space for short presentations by students and for discussing issues that have emerged from the lessons); listening to and studying pre-recorded lessons uploaded to the Panopto and Kiro platforms. Students who are recipients of the special inclusive teaching methods are asked to agree with the teacher on a personal learning path adapted to their needs.

Assessment Methods

Oral exam (approximately 30 minutes) with at least 3 questions on different parts of the course and assessment of the ability to apply theoretical knowledge to new data. Particular focus will be put on accuracy in describing and interpreting artistic data within the appropriate context. Students benefiting from the special inclusive teaching methods are asked to agree with the lecturer on customised examination methods.

Contents

The reuse of antiquities in the Middle Ages. The course addresses the theme of the reuse of antiquities in the Middle Ages, with special focus on aims, methods and selection of objects involved in this phenomenon, which so characterized medieval art and also influenced the formation of the Romanesque artistic language. The lessons will present examples of the reuse of ancient objects made of different materials: marble, gems and cameos, ivory, metals, etc., and their reuse in different contexts (secular, religious, etc.). Part of the course will be dedicated to significant episodes of reworking and imitation of antiquity by medieval artists.
