Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, students will be able to: master the structure of a digital library; understand the scientific, organisational, technical and economic aspects of a digitisation project; understand the main technologies needed to implement a digital library; be aware of issues related to institutional policies and copyright for the use, publication and reuse of digital media.

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of Library Science, the world of libraries and online information retrieval tools (OPAC, databases, search engines). If you do not have any prior knowledge of Library Science, we recommend that you catch up by studying the recommended manual (see below).

Teaching Methods

The course is organised into teaching units (i.e. topics covered in sequential order), which can be delivered by the teacher through one or more lectures, group exercises (during lessons, in laboratory hours or even at home independently), recorded lessons and interactive distance learning lessons. The teacher's slides are published regularly on the KIRO platform, together with all teaching materials (readings, examples, links to online tools, etc.), but only at the end of a teaching unit (which does not necessarily coincide with a single lesson).

Assessment Methods

Examination procedure

The examination, which is entirely written, consists of a written paper to test the knowledge acquired and lasts a maximum of 150 minutes.
The test consists of a written paper with questions provided on paper and aims to assess the knowledge acquired by answering three open-ended questions related to the topics and/or subjects covered in class within each teaching unit or acquired through the study of the texts indicated in the bibliography.
In answering the open-ended questions (examples of open-ended questions may include: What is a digital library? How are digital collections managed? What specific skills does a librarian need to manage digital collections? How should the issue of copyright and intellectual property rights be addressed? Creative Commons licences. The IFLA UNESCO Manifesto for Digital Libraries), candidates must demonstrate extensive knowledge of the content and technical terminology, clarity of expression and the ability to summarise. The ability to critically rework the issues examined and highlight the crucial and cross-cutting issues of the discipline is particularly appreciated.
Each open-ended answer is assessed according to the following quality criteria:
● Completeness of content, balance and accuracy in presenting the topic;
● Presentation (clarity, organisation, ability to summarise);
● Formal correctness (use of language, use of sources, citation style, if applicable);
● Presence of examples;
● Originality.

For each part of the test, the mark will be expressed in thirtieths and the final result will be the average of the marks obtained in all the open-ended questions in the test.
