As a course of English for special/specific purposes (ESP), its aim is to consolidate the students' ability to analyse scientific texts, understand text structure and summarize an informative passage. The course also aims at improving the students' four skills (listening, reading, speaking and writing) and expanding their vocabulary, making them familiar with a specialized lexicon.
Course Prerequisites
Listening, reading, speaking and writing skills developed up to level B1/B2 according to the CEF.
Teaching Methods
The course consists of lectures delivered by the teacher and of drills offered by two CELs. The teacher reads, translates and analyses the texts on a morpho-syntactic, lexical and pragmatic level, encouraging active participation among the students. The two mother tongue teachers lead the students to the development of their listening and speaking skills.
Assessment Methods
The students' final assessment will be an oral exam consisting in the reading, discussion and analysis of the texts studied during the course. The final marks are out of 30.

Handouts can be downloaded from Kiro. During the course, students will be provided with further material dealing with various aspects of the academic style.
Contents
The programme consists of a selection of scientific authentic texts, which will be analysed in order to allow the students to acquire a specialized lexicon and to raise their awareness of the syntactic structures commonly used in scientific language.

When required and by appointment, the professor will commit to provide students with two hours of on line reception per week, and with the most suitable material for exam preparation. Additional language support is provided by the two CELs, Dr. Dodd and Dr. Vitry, who run an English language remedial and enhancement course (general English and medical English).
