Syllabus

Course Objectives


The lectures will illustrate (i) the principles of stoichiometry; (ii) laboratory techniques, which will be used by students during the experimental activities: e.g. purification of solids by recrystallization; purity determination by volumetric analysis, acid-base and redox.
Lectures will also illustrate the laboratory activities and techniques (purification of solids by recrystallization; volumetric analysis; preparation of coordination /inorganic compounds)

Course Prerequisites


basic mathematical knowledge (secondary school level)

Teaching Methods

Lectures and exercises; an interactive electronic platform (Wooclap) will be employed as a teaching resource to stimulate learning and improve teacher-student interaction

Assessment Methods

The overall exam of the course "Stechiometria e Laboratorio di Chimica" will consist in both written and oral tests. In the written test, the students will be given a list of problems (stoichiometry) and questions (regarding the laboratory activity). Once the written test has been passed, the student accesses the oral exam, that will be principally focused on the theoretical part of the course (stoichiometry and laboratory). The final grade will be calculated as an average of the marks obtained in the written and oral tests.

Reaction balance; reaction yields; determination of the molecular formula starting from the elemental analysis (and viceversa) ; weight ratios in the reactions;
preparation of solutions; volumetric analysis; equilibria in the gas phase; acid-base equilibria; pH calculation; buffer solutions; behavior of ideal gases; precipitation reactions and solubility.
