Course Objectives
Practical training in Pharmaceutical Analysis 2 (2 ECTs)
The aim of the course is to introduce the students to practice (or experimental)
quantitative drug analysis, and to train the students to the national examination to the pharmacist job.
The Practical training will be carried out individually/groups by students in laboratories where
they will be allowed to operate autonomously and to choose and execute the proper analytical method to
quantify the drug substances. Both classical (titration) and instrumental analytical procedures will be practiced.
Quantitative Drug Analysis (6 ECTs)
This course aims to give the theoretical bases required in the quantitative analysis of compounds of pharmaceutical
interest, and the know-how to properly address the choice of the most appropriate analytical method for the quantitative
determination of drugs substances and drug products. The student training will be focused on learning the analytical
procedures in quantitative drug analysis that are reported in Official Pharmacopoeia Monographies, using also the
computing capacity acquired with solving specific problems. The program involves also the explanation of instrumental methods able to obtain analytical data with a particular interest on chemical-pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industry (Quality Control).

Course Prerequisites
The exams of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, General and Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Analysis 1 are preparatory.
In detail, entrants must have:
-the minimum grade in the Mathematic course;
-the minimum grade in the Organic Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Chemistry courses;
-good grade in General and Inorganic Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry courses: knowledge of: periodic table; chemical formula and nomenclatures; acid-base equilibria and pH; insoluble salts and solubility product; formation of complexes; Nerst equation and redox reactions;
-the minimum grade in Statistics: significant figures rules, average, absolute and realtive errors, standard deviation-accuracy and precision;
-good grade in Pharmaceutical Analysis 1 course, the qualitative analysis is preparatory for the quantitative one: spectrophotometry and UV-Vis spectra; cromatography modes; HPLC technique; detectors; chromatographic parameters-capacity factor, selectivity, efficiency and resolution.

Teaching Methods
Practical training in Pharmaceutical Analysis 2 (2 ECTs)
Each practical experience will be introduced by a theoretical lesson where the experience will be illustrated.
Quantitative Drug Analysis (6 ECTs) Practice excercises are not included.

Assessment Methods
Practical training in Pharmaceutical Analysis 2 (2 ECTs) Conditions to achieve the course:
-each student will be required to attend the laboratories for a total of 32 hours (16 hours x ECT). The attendance is mandatory.
-the exit of each examination (quantitative determination) will be element of evaluation to achieve the practical course;
-the student must obtain a mean evaluation of at least 18/30;
The achievement of this course is necessary to be admitted at teaching exam of Pharmaceutical Analysis 2 and it doesn’t give title to acquire the 2 ECT: the 8 ECTs (6+2) acquisition of teaching will occur only after the achievement of the whole teaching.
Quantitative Drug Analysis (6 ECTs) Conditions to achieve the course:
-an admission test with 4 basic chemical formulas from general and analytical chemistry (raised also at course) is set out. For the students, who correctly will perform the 4 formulas.
Then a written exam with different exercises, included open questions, quiz with multiple choice and explanation of the answer, description of titration curves and graphics and 2 problems will be used for evaluating students;
-the ECTs (6) acquisition is associated with the achievement either of exams in final (written) examination (evaluation of at least 18/30).

Contents
Practical training in Pharmaceutical Analysis 2 (2 ECTs)
The course includes Practical training in single-workplace laboratories for the quantitative part using titrations, while group experiences will be carried out in the case of instrumental quantitative analysis. On the basis of the theory acquired during the courses of Drugs Identification (semester V) and Quantitative Drug Analysis, the student will be able to characterize quantitative (by volumetric and instrumental methods) inorganic and organic substances registered in the Italian Official Pharmacopoeia and in the European Pharmacopoeia. Each student will work for 32 hours.
Quantitative Drug Analysis (6 ECTs)
Principles of pharmaceutical quantitative analysis. The Italian and the European Pharmacopeias and Supplements in analytical control of substances of pharmaceutical interest. Safety regulations (rules) in laboratory (D.L. n. 626; 19/9/94). Gravimetric and volumetric analysis. Titrations in non-aqueous media. Precipitating titrations. Complexometric titrations. Redox titrations. Gravimetric and volumetric analysis (Italian and European Pharmacopeias). Instrumental Analysis: potentiometry and quantitative analysis of absorbance spectra (UV-Visible-Fluorimetry). Chromatographic methods.
During the lessons some exercises and problems will be illustrated and solved.
