Contents
The course aims above all to provide students with some basic notions on Dante's biography, on the history of tradition and the fortune of his works and especially of the Comedy, with hints to the linguistic context of early fourteenth-century Italy, to the philological question and to the ancient exegesis of the poem. In addition, indications will be provided to guide you through the main bibliographic tools relating to Dante and the Comedy, with particular regard to the critical editions of the 20th and 21st century and to the studies currently underway. Then the problem of the language and style of the Comedy will be addressed, starting from a fundamental fact: Dante's autographs have not been preserved. After a general framing of the poema, some canti from Inferno (in particular from the Malebolge) will be read, interpreted and analysed. And above all an in-depth linguistic reading will be made, with particular attention to the phonomorphological aspect, to the syntactic and lexical one and to the rhetorical apparatus.
Course Language
