Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide a solid knowledge of the fundamentals of German linguistics, as well as specific analysis tools for morphosyntactic structures of the German language. Students will learn to recognize and analyze German structures, especially in written contexts, but without neglecting speech. The main aim is to refine the analytical and interpretative abilities, here in particular for the morphosyntactic and grammatical structures, providing students with a rich choice of analysis tools based on the most recent reflections of German linguistics. In addition to the more specifically analytical skills, the course will provide students with the opportunity to strengthen grammar skills and broaden the vocabulary, moreover, to have a first approach to textual genres and their structural specificities, which will be studied in the second year.

Course Prerequisites

To profitably follow the course a basic knowledge of the German language is required, at least equal to that acquired by beginners (Groups IA) who have started to study the language at the beginning of the first academic year following the ‘didattica integrativa’ (language courses) from the beginning of October
Having attended the course in General Linguistics is very helpful.
The lectures are in Italian.

Teaching Methods

Frontal lessons; individual or group work and discussions in plenum. The required active participation is an indispensable prerequisite for achieving the objectives of the course.
There will be a practical linguistic tutorial for exercising the analytical skills acquired during the course. Students will be asked to work on specific exercises to practically integrate the theoretical frameworks. The exercises are part of the exam program; if not done during the tutoring hours, it must be prepared for the exam.

Non-attending students will prepare the given bibliography.
“Didattica integrative”: frontal lessons, group work and self-study.

Placement-Test: All students wishing to attend the first year of German Language are required to take the level test to assess their group of German “didattica integrativa”. Beginners are requested to connect to the platform to activate inclusion in the appropriate teaching group. Instruction on how to proceed will be given at the beginning of the academic year.

Assessment Methods

The exam includes an oral assessment and will take place in Italian or even German as the student chooses.
During the final written exam students will have to show they have acquired a good knowledge of basic concepts and topic as well as the ability to expose the themes with language properties. The discussion will focus on structures, sentences and examples seen in class for attending students, on those explained in the bibliography for non-attending students. It will require a good ability to identify and analyze the structures.

To enter the exam, you must have passed all the written and oral preliminary tests, which attest to the achievement of the minimum level required for the course year. The written tests are:
- Cloze (completion of a text with grammatical elements / Multiple Choice); - Aufsatz (composition);
- Hörverstehen (listening) (exempted who has a Zertifikat Deutsch from no more than 2 years);
- Textarbeit (text comprehension, by the professor).
Students who have attended at least 70% of the ‘didattica integrativa’ can take partial preliminary tests in the scheduled sessions.
The oral preparatory test, aimed at ascertaining the level of oral comprehension and expression, can be performed only after passing all the written tests and closes the assessment of the instrumental language. Subject of the interview will be readings chosen by the student from a list that will be released at the beginning of the academic year. It will take place entirely in German.

Contents

The course focuses on morphosyntactic phenomena. The construction of the German sentence and the formation of the word will be discussed in particular. The concrete analytical skills developed will be deepened by a framing in the main models of syntactic and morphological description, providing students with a solid theoretical basis alongside the strengthening of the instrumental one. Analytical and comprehension skills will be exercised on authentic texts extending the specific morphosyntactic perspective also to considerations of a sociolinguistic nature.
Non-attending students are required to develop a sound knowledge of the basic concepts of German linguistics based on the given bibliography. They will have to prepare additional readings for the examination (contact the teacher).

In addition to the Course, there is ‘didattica integrativa’ with C.E.L.s (Collaboratori ed esperti linguistici). This supplementary teaching lasts one year and aims to develop the grammar, writing, listening and conversation linguistic skills at the A2 level (Common European Framework of Reference) for beginners and to strengthen the skills possessed by intermediate and advanced students related to their level.
