Course Objectives
The course aims to enable students to further develop their skills in the interpretation of historical sources and to deepen their study of selected aspects and phenomena of Greek history and historiography, with particular attention to the relationship between events and their representation, as well as to the interplay between history, documentation, and rhetoric, especially in Greek historians, but also in philosophers and orators.
Course Prerequisites
A general knowledge of the main developments of Greek history and historiography, from the Archaic and Classical periods to the 2nd century AD, is required.
Knowledge of Ancient Greek will be positively evaluated; however, translations of the ancient texts and documents will be provided in Italian.

Assessment Methods
The examination is oral. During the interview, the following will be assessed:
- knowledge of Greek history and historiography;
- the ability to read, comment on, and analyse sources and documents;
- accuracy and organization of the material;
- proper use of academic language;
- clarity of exposition and effectiveness of the arguments.

Contents
The course is devoted to the study of Pausanias’ Description of Greece as a work of Imperial-period historiography, in which the description of places is closely intertwined with historical narrative, literary tradition, and cultural memory. Through the reading and commentary of selected passages, the course will examine the status of the work, suspended between periegesis, antiquarian writing, and historiography, and its relationship with earlier Greek historians, especially Herodotus, Thucydides, and Polybius.
Particular attention will be paid to the relationship between autopsy, learned tradition, and the construction of the narrative, as well as to the ways in which Pausanias selects and organizes historical material. Special focus will be given to the use of inscriptions in the Periegesis, in order to address the relationship between history and documentary evidence, and between monumental memory and literary narrative.
The course will also consider the meaning of places, sanctuaries, and monuments as spaces of memory, and the way in which the description of landscape becomes a tool for historical construction and for the definition of Greek identity in the Imperial age.
