Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with the linguistic tools for understanding titles and brief news provided by the Arabic media. Oral skills in the above-mentioned topics will also be developed with regard to Standard Arabic, as well as the written production of short news items and/or summaries of audio/video files.

Course Prerequisites

A basic knowledge of MSA Arabic is required. Students who do not have an adequate level of knowledge are required to follow the intensive course of the Summer School SAA (info https://saa.cdl.unipv.it/it/studiare/summer-school), which will be held in September, as well as additional reinforcement hours during the first semester.

Teaching Methods

Lectures with the help of telematic tools.

With regard to inclusive teaching methods, students who have been certified to be in the conditions required by the University regulations (https://portale.unipv.it/it/didattica/servizi-lo-studente/modalita-didattiche-inclusive) will be given guidance on preparing for the exam independently as well as availability for dedicated receptions.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of written and oral tests. The written exam will consist in a written comprehension with questions and exercises on collocations and grammar. The use of dictionary is not aloud. The oral exam will consist in a reading comprehension and a conversation with the mother tongue teacher.

Contents

In this module students will learn the language of the Arab media and how to use the most common syntactic structures, with special reference to the vocabulary of meetings and conferences.
The course will enable students to master core vocabulary and structures typical of front-page news, while engaging them in activities including extensive practice of words used in context, organizing information, skimming, scanning and analyzing content.

Part of the supplementary teaching hours will also be dedicated to the Moroccan dialect variety.

A constant frequency of lessons is required, included the supplementary teaching classes with the mother tongue teacher.

THE ADVANCED ARABIC LANGUAGE EXAM FOR THE SAA DEGREE IS WORTH 18 CREDITS AND IS ONLY VERBALIZED AT THE END OF THE ADVANCED ARABIC 2 EXAM.
