Course Objectives

The mass media and the digital revolution we are experiencing are deeply connected with the mechanisms of formation of public opinion which today proves to be increasingly reactive and experiences processes of disintermediation in accessing relevant information that favors its direct participation.
The aim of the course is to provide students with knowledge and analysis tools (theories, concepts, empirical research) to understand the relationship between the processes of public opinion formation in the digital world and the ethical limits and the political and social consequences of new participation models digital.
During the course, particular attention will be given to the Italian case in a comparative perspective.

Teaching Methods

The course includes lectures and seminars, with reading and discussion of additional materials in class. Attending and motivated students can agree with the teacher the conduct and presentation of an empirical research.

Assessment Methods

Seminars and oral exam (with one possibility of written exam in January and February).

Texts will be indicated at the beginning of the classes and on the Kiro page of the course.

Contents

The topics covered will be: communicative disintermediation processes in the digital world, political-electoral competition and public opinion, analysis of social media; evolutionary scenarios in the relationship between the mass media and the digital revolution; media use; electoral campaigns; elections and public opinion in Italy and in comparative perspective; elections.
