In this course, the student will put in practice some of the theoretical concepts they have learnt in the parallel Human Genetics course (code 500455). In particular, they will learn the basics of molecular genetics techniques (DNA extraction and quantification, DNA amplification through PCR, DNA sequencing). At the end of the course, it is expected that the students will have gained a practical view of molecular biology and will be able to discuss practical applications in diagnostics and research.
Course Prerequisites
Basic concepts of general biology, with special reference to the structure of the eukaryotic cell, DNA, RNA and proteins. Concepts of DNA replication, DNA transcription and mRNA translation (protein synthesis).
Teaching Methods
Interactive lessons with practical examples
Assessment Methods
Three multiple choice questions included in the Human Genetics exam (see details regarding the exam in the Syllabus of the Human Genetics course)
Texts
A book is not necessary for this section of the course. The students will receive slides and documentation used during the course.
Contents
Students will learn basic concepts about extraction and quantification of DNA, PCR reaction and sequencing, as well as the use of common genomic, population and disease databases.
Course Language
English
