Syllabus

Course Objectives

Learning Objectives and Learning results. At the successful conclusion of this module, you should be able to demonstrate the following Module Level Learning Outcomes (MLOs): • MLO.1 Knowledge & Understanding: Define core statistical terms and concepts (population, sample, variable types) and recognize appropriate graphical/tabular methods. • MLO.2 Application of Knowledge: Apply descriptive methods to summarize datasets. • MLO.3 Autonomy of Judgement: Select and justify appropriate methods for medical scenarios and critically evaluate studies. • MLO.4 Communication Skills: Interpret and present data using correct graphs, tables, and terminology (MCQs). • MLO.5 Learning Skills: Navigate the curriculum integrating lectures, readings, software training, and independent study; Demonstrate scientific reasoning and critical reading to connect history, statistics, and epidemiology for understanding disease patterns and evaluating study/analysis methods.

Course Prerequisites

Prerequisites. For further information see the Integrated Course Syllabus “[506496] - SCIENTIFIC FOUNDATIONS OF MEDICINE”

Teaching Methods

Teaching methods include lectures, which present key concepts or practices (supports LO.1, LO.2) and are supported by discussion, guided readings, PC-based sessions, project-based learning and the e-learning platform (supports LO.5) The module will include guidance to help you prepare for the exam (supports LO.4, 5) and throughout the course you will be presented with references to further readings and other materials which emphasise the integrated nature of the study of disease (supports LO.5).

Assessment Methods

Learning assessment methods. For further information see the Integrated Course Syllabus “[506496] - SCIENTIFIC FOUNDATIONS OF MEDICINE”.

Contents

Contents. The purpose of this module, as a component of the “SCIENTIFIC METHODS IN MEDICINE” Integrated Course, is to provide you with an understanding of statistical terminology employed in scientific research to describe populations and samples and to interpret and produce tabular or graphical statistical descriptions of medical data. Themes covered include: • Scientific reasoning; • Population, sample and sampling methods; • Data organization; Description of statistical unit and type of variables; • Frequency distribution for qualitative and quantitative variables; Graphics; • Descriptive statistics: mean; median, mode, centiles, range, variance, standard deviation, coefficient of variation; • Scatterplot & Pearson’s correlation coefficient.
