Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (02/03/2026 - 29/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

Learning Objectives and learning results. • MLO.1 Knowledge & Understanding: Understand simple statistical analyses to explain relationships between prognostic, therapeutic, or environmental variables and outcomes. • MLO.2 Application of Knowledge: Apply inferential methods to interpret relationships and produce tabular/graphical descriptions. • MLO.3 Autonomy of Judgement: Select and justify appropriate methods for medical scenarios and critically evaluate studies. • MLO.4 Communication Skills: Interpret and present data using correct graphs, tables, and terminology (MCQs). • MLO.5 Learning Skills: Navigate the curriculum integrating lectures, readings, software training, and independent study; Demonstrate scientific reasoning and critical reading to connect history, statistics, and epidemiology for understanding disease patterns and evaluating study/analysis methods.

Course Prerequisites

Prerequisites. For further information see the Integrated Course Syllabus “[506496] - SCIENTIFIC FOUNDATIONS OF MEDICINE”

Teaching Methods

Teaching methods. Teaching methods include lectures, which present key concepts or practices (supports LO.1, LO.2) and are supported by discussion (supports LO.2-3), guided readings, PC-based sessions, project-based learning and the e-learning platform (supports LO.5) The module will include guidance to help you prepare for the exam (supports LO.4, 5) and throughout the course you will be presented with references to further readings and other materials which emphasise the integrated nature of the study of disease (supports LO.5).

Assessment Methods

Learning assessment methods. See Course Syllabus “[506496] - SCIENTIFIC FOUNDATIONS OF MEDICINE”

Texts

Textbooks. Pagano M, Gauvreau K, Mattie H. Principles of Biostatistics. 3rd ed. Taylor & Francis; 2022. Daniel WW, Cross CL. Biostatistics: A Foundation for Analysis in the Health Sciences. 11th ed. Wiley; 2018.

Contents

Contents. The purpose of this module, as a component of the “SCIENTIFIC METHODS IN MEDICINE” Integrated Course, is to provide you with the skills to understand and formulate simple statistical analyses and interpretative models to explain the relationships between prognostic or therapeutic or environmental variables and clinical or biological outcomes. Themes covered include: • Evaluating the error probability of epidemiological conclusions (the p-value); parametric and non-parametric statistical tests; • Tests for different sorts of medical observations, including t-test, chi square test, F-test; point and interval estimation, its confidence level; • The power of a study to detect a presumed therapeutic or harmful effect – the computation of the wanted sample size; • Statistical models for estimation or prediction.
