Syllabus

Course Objectives

Learning objectives and learning results. At the successful conclusion of this module, you should be able to demonstrate the following Module Level Learning Outcomes (MLOs): • MLO.1 Knowledge & Understanding: Describe practical skills in statistical and epidemiological analysis. • MLO.2 Application of Knowledge: Apply analysis and interpretation skills to produce written reports. • MLO.3 Autonomy of Judgement: Interpret outputs relative to research aims and recognize errors in analysis. • MLO.4 Communication Skills: Communicate results clearly in writing and participate professionally in collaborative tasks. • MLO.5 Learning Skills: Navigate the curriculum integrating lectures, readings, software training, and independent study; Demonstrate scientific reasoning and critical reading to connect history, statistics, and epidemiology for understanding disease patterns and evaluating study/analysis methods.

Course Prerequisites

Prerequisites. For further information see the Integrated Course Syllabus “[506496] - SCIENTIFIC FOUNDATIONS OF MEDICINE”

Teaching Methods

Teaching methods include lectures, which present key concepts or practices (supports LO.1, LO.2) supported by discussion (supports LO.2-3), guided readings and the e-learning platform (supports LO.5) This practice based lab module will give you direct experience of applying concepts you have learnt (supports LO.2-3), where you will work together in smaller groups (supports LO.4) conducting statistical analyses of real medical data, performed using the statistical language “R”. The module will include guidance to help you prepare for the exam (supports LO.4, 5).

Assessment Methods

Texts

Textbooks. Fischetti T. Data Analysis with R: A Comprehensive Guide to Manipulating, Analyzing, and Visualizing Data in R. 2nd ed. Packt Publishing; 2018. Midway S. Data Analysis in R. Columbia University Press; 2021. Batra N, Neale T, et al. The Epidemiologist R Handbook. 2021

Contents

Contents. The purpose of this module, as a component of the “SCIENTIFIC METHODS IN MEDICINE” Integrated Course, is to provide you with practical experience of laboratory-based work and practical skills in epidemiological and statistical analysis which are relevant to medical research. Through guided practical exercises, data analysis and the interpretation of results you will develop the ability to apply epidemiological and statistical methods to medical data. Throughout this, there is an emphasis on critical thinking and interpretation of results and themes covered include: • Introduction to statistical software; • Overview of statistical software used in medical research; • introduction to R, basic commands and data manipulation, graphing medical data; • Descriptive statistics; • Parametric and non-parametric hypothesis tests; correlation (Pearson's r); • Linear regression, Logistic regression; • R for epidemiology.
