Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (29/09/2025 - 16/01/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, the student will demonstrate: 1. a good knowledge of the biological mechanisms regulating eukaryotic cell growth and behaviour in culture. 2. a good understanding of the biological parameters reflecting cell health, growth and phenotype. 3. a good knowledge and understanding of the technologies applicable to assess cell behaviour and in vitro response. 4. the potential to apply the acquired knowledge to understand and interpret scientific results presented in relevant scientific literature.

Course Prerequisites

Good knowledge of biological mechanisms related to the cell cycle; embryogenesis; DNA structure and replication; transcription; translation; apoptosis; cell signalling.

Teaching Methods

Lectures and lab practicals supported by slide presentations. For some topics, use of multimedia animations.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a written test with a mix of questions such as multiple choice questions and open-ended questions. The student should demonstrate not only knowledge of the topics covered but also the ability to link them together.

Texts

Scientific articles and reviews from selected international journals.

Contents

Biological properties relevant to the eukaryotic cell; Cell division & proliferation; Cell viability & senescence; Cell culture principles; Flow Cytometry techniques; In situ hybridisation techniques; Cell tracing approaches; Gene expression assays ; Epigenetics; Cell migration; Gene modification methods; Phenotyping & marker analysis; Advanced microscopy & multiscale imaging; 3D culture models & tissues; Disease models.
