Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to introduce some fundamental notions of mathematics and statistics. The student is expected to learn the meaning and possibility of using analytical tools such as limits, derivatives, integrals and the basic notions of statistics and probability in a scientific framework.

Course Prerequisites

No specific requirements, other than the basic mathematical notions provided by the ordinary school, are requested.

Teaching Methods

Lectures, enriched with examples and exercises, carried out in the classroom by the teachers Pierluigi Colli and Raffaella Carbone. For most of the course, the teachers write on the blackboard. For some topics, use of a presentation via slides shown on the projector. Availability to discuss with the students within the hours of receipt. Availability to discuss with students during office hours.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a written part and a possible oral part. The written test includes 6 exercises, of which 3 for the Mathematics part and 3 for the Statistics and Probability part. The exercises are aimed at verifying the learning of both the practical part and the theoretical reference framework. The exercises have a complete text with data and questions asked to the student and require a complete resolution on separate sheets. To pass the exam, the student is required to complete at least one exercise in the Mathematics part and at least one exercise in the Statistics and Probability part. After the written test, the teacher communicates the results and offers only those students who obtain a passing grade in the written test either direct verbalization or an oral interview. If the written grade is n/30, the student who does not take the oral exam will be graded n/30. The oral test will start from an analysis of the written text. During the oral exam, the student has to show that he can master the notions of the course and he is able to use these notions in situations proposed by the teachers. Appropriate compensatory measures are provided for students with disabilities, who are invited to contact the teachers to learn about the support tools available to them.

More information

The teachers are available to the students to provide them with indications and suggestions for the selection of texts and educational material, as well as proposals for exercises, exam tests and theoretical support material. Students in the categories identified by the project on innovative teaching will have the opportunity to hold receptions also online and by appointment at times to be agreed with the teachers, or view the teachers’ lecture notes.
