The learning outcomes is the knowledge of microgrids (definition and configurations) and how to model sizing issues for helping an increased penetration of RES, the resilience concept and identification of KPIs (key performance indicators) for the implementation of a decision-support system with concurrent objectives
Course Prerequisites
Models and algorithms for energy planning, linear programming (MG makes the most of PECS basics), electrical energetics, energy conversion, thermal machines (it is a plus).
Teaching Methods
Lectures and exercises carried out together in the classroom. Visit at the teaching microgrid lab: hands on a small-scale microgrid system, in groups at the end of the course The course is delivered in presence. Video recordings from past years are available for the full length of the course. (March-end of September). Students are invited to download the materials before it goes offline.
Assessment Methods
When taken as single module (E3 ECTS), the exam consists of an interview on all the topics (lessons/exercises) taught in class. When taken as part of the course ENERGY MANAGEMENT (9 ECTS) the test can be carried out also on a PC of either labs B1/B2/C1 or similar.
Texts
Materials suitably made and offered on KIRO
Contents
Introducing the challenges of future energy systems. Definition of microgrid. Configurations (connected or islanded, AC, DC). Sizing of PV systems and storage in hybrid microgrids. Battery degradation how to account for it at system level. Identification and assessment of specific KPIs Resilience concept and suitable KPIs Overview on software Case study: formulation implementation and analysis of scenarios (Xendee o Homer supported) Two industrial seminars will be offered on (a) protection and switching needs in Low Voltage microgrids; (b) measurement, supervision and microgrid automation
