Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to develop advanced skills in designing and applying adapted physical activity for major metabolic, cardiovascular, and respiratory diseases, with particular attention to the effects of exercise on symptom management, the improvement of functional and biochemical parameters, and the quality of life of individuals with these conditions.

Neurodegenerative and respiratory-COPD disease Module:
The course aims to develop advanced skills in the assessment, planning, and application of gait as an aerobic training strategy for neurological and respiratory conditions, with particular attention to the effects of exercise on symptom control, improvement of functional and biomechanical parameters, and quality of life for those with these conditions.

Course Prerequisites

A good knowledge of anatomy and human physiology—particularly exercise physiology and training theories—is necessary.

Neurodegenerative and respiratory-COPD disease Module:
A good knowledge of anatomy, exercise physiology, biomechanics and theory of training is advisable.

Teaching Methods

Neuromuscular diseases module: Lectures will be delivered in which the pathophysiological foundations and the principles of exercise therapy for the main neuromuscular diseases will be analyzed. Selected indexed scientific articles addressing new frontiers in adapted exercise for the conditions under study will also be examined.

Neurodegenerative and respiratory-COPD disease Module:
Lectures will analyze the biomechanical, functional, and pathophysiological bases, as well as the principles of exercise and treatment for major neurological and respiratory diseases (COPD). A selection of indexed scientific articles will be analyzed, addressing new frontiers in exercise adapted to the conditions being studied. Practical activities (active learning) will be used in lectures and in the laboratory.

Assessment Methods

The oral exam is aimed at assessing the knowledge acquired regarding the functional, biomechanical, and pathophysiological bases of the pathologies being studied, as well as the most appropriate methods for developing personalized walking exercise programs to improve the clinical condition, quality of life, and motor and non-motor symptoms in the pathological conditions being studied.
