Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course will cover the theoretical basis and practical applications of well-established physiological tests, with a particular emphasis on their utility in both performance enhancement and health promotion.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical lessons, reading, and review of the latest scientific information on applied physiology in exercise and sport science, complemented by laboratory practices.

Assessment Methods

Attendance of more than 75% of classes is mandatory.

Contents

The course "Applied Physiology in Exercise and Sport Science" will consist of four parts, comprising both theoretical and practical lessons:
1. VO2max/VO2peak: Classical versus contemporary viewpoints
2. Anaerobic threshold: Definition and measurement techniques
3. Exercise intensity domains and VO2 kinetics
4. Critical power/speed

Dr. Andrew M. Jones is a Professor of Applied Physiology at the University of Exeter, United Kingdom, where he previously served as Associate Dean for Research Impact at the College of Life and Environmental Sciences. Professor "Andy" Jones has also played a key role in some of the greatest achievements in marathon running history. He coached Paula Radcliffe to her extraordinary world record in London in 2003 and worked with the multiple medal-winning athlete Eliud Kipchoge on the Breaking 2 and Ineos 01:59 projects, aimed at achieving the first sub-two-hour marathon. Additionally, he has recently worked with Olympic marathoners who won medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
