Syllabus

Course Objectives

In a multicultural and hyper-connected society, students are expected to learn to efficiently communicate and to perform, in English, a number of activities which are inherent to their future positions (speaking/writing/listening/reading skills at B1 level): • further knowledge and proficient use of basic English grammar (30 hours with the mother tongue Teacher); • part of the lectures will be focused on SPEAKING activities • use of technological tools (computers, softwares, Apps, cameras, etc.) which are widely spread in any academic and working setting;

Course Prerequisites

Students should possess an excellent knowledge of their mother tongue and an intermediate competence in English, in all four skills. Their CEFR level, at University, should be A2-B1.

Teaching Methods

Classwork or Remote teaching/learning will be based on: • Grammar (with C.E.L.): grammar practice (exercises and tests); • General/Academic English: - short dialogues, in English, where students are invited to speak about their personal life and their future professions; - Listening/watching/reading activities, in order to widen the students' vocabulary and competence in a wide range of subjects. The same files/clips are intended to propel discussion and dialogues among the students (speaking activity). E-Learning: students are invited to find, download and study some texts on-line or to view videos and websites suggested by the teacher. A "Programme" - a PDF document, supplied to each student - links to the suggested web files. The documents are mostly shared by the teacher via Kiro/Moodle or a specific Google Drive folder.

Assessment Methods

=WRITTEN exam: for non-attending students, and for those who have attended less than 75% of the course (lessons given by both the CEL and the professor). It consists of a test with grammar exercises/drills. =ORAL exam: for ALL the students. Interview with open questions about the subjects discussed during classwork. The students will also be asked to present/explain TWO SONG LYRICS and TWO ACADEMIC ARTICLES of their choice. It is not possible to sit the written exam and the oral exam on the same day. In case Remote Teaching is still active due to the Covid crisis, both Grammar and Language tests will take place either in the classroom or via Zoom, and they will both be ORAL, not written, tests. ALL the Students will have to take the Grammar test.

Texts

= General English, Grammar (Prof. M. Elphinstone): Raymond Murphy, Lelio Pallini - Essential Grammar in Use (3rd edition). = General English, Academic English, English for Specific Purposes (Prof. N. Maglia): students will be given sheets prepared by the teacher herself and loaded on KIRO for every klecture "Syllabus" - a PDF document. Each file will be uploaded and shared via Kiro/Moodle system or a specific Google Drive folder. • On-line Dictionaries: Merriam-Webster, Collins, Oxford Dictionaries.
