Syllabus

Course Objectives

This course addresses the History of European music of the Seventeenth- and Eighteenth-century. It will focus on the the main forms of the Instrumental music developed from the beginning of the Seventeenth century until the beginning of the Nineteenth century (Sonata da chiesa and da camera, Concerto, Suite, Sinfonia and Quartet) with special - but not absolute - regards to the violin repertoire and, more, the lessons will address some interesting case study from the vocal repertoire with the intent to reconstruct the historical and cultural background.
At the end, each student will acquire he necessary skills to study autonomously the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century music.

Course Prerequisites

A good background in the historical and literary field as well as basic music knowledge are required, with the exception of students enrolled in the Literary Sciences and Cultural Heritage programme, for whom ad hoc courses will be agreed upon. If the student needs to go over some topics, the reading of appropriate handbooks on music theory, history and literature of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries is recommended.

Teaching Methods

The course is organised in lectures involving students in listening and analysing of compositions. The material available on the virtual platform KIRO should be downloaded in time and brought to the lesson by students. Professors will provide instructions on how to engage with it. They are available during their office hours to assist students during their learning journey.

Assessment Methods

Oral exam. Starting from the listening to a composition selected by the professors, the student should demonstrate knowledge of the history of the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century music and ability to critically analyse compositions with the support of the musical material. They should demonstrate to have integrated knowledge acquired during the course with individual study of the bibliography. Beyond the knowledge about historical and musical topics, the ability to logically articulate concepts with appropriate scientific vocabulary will be evaluated.

For a general overview of the authors and compositions under consideration, refer to Mario Carrozzo, Cristina Cimagalli, Storia della musica occidentale. Vol. 2. Dal Barocco al Classicismo viennese, Armando Editore, Roma, 2008.

The bibliographical references to scores, libretti and performances of the selected compositions will be provided during the course and they will be available on KIRO,if they are not readily available in the library or online.

Contents

The course will address the History of European music between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, focusing on the development of the instrumental repertoire (the church and chamber Sonata, the Concerto, the Suite, the Symphony and the Quartet) and of the vocal repertoire (the opera, the cantata, and the oratorio).
The necessary historical-cultural notes of each era and the linguistic-musical coordinates will be provided to successfully deal with the pages and plays that will be examined during the lessons.

The students who don't attend lectures should get in contact with the professors to agree on the exam programme.

According to the resolution of the academic governing bodies, inclusive teaching methods will be implemented upon request for particular categories of students during the course: online reception, provision of material on the Kiro platform and any seminars. However, it is essential that interested students report their situation in time.
