Syllabus

Course Objectives

Knowledge of the main sources for the study of Italian art history from the 14th to the 19th century, with particular regard to artists' biographies, artistic and architectural theories, and the main critical trends in the visual arts and architecture, from the beginnings of Romanticism to the end of the 20th century. Education in the use of literary, historiographical, and theoretical sources for the understanding of works of art and monuments.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of the essential aspects of Italian art history from the 14th to the 19th century. Students wishing to attend the course must already have obtained credits in Medieval Art History and Modern Art History.

Teaching Methods

Lectures and seminar activities with student participation.

Assessment Methods

Students must be able to read, interpret and discuss the texts analysed during the course, placing them chronologically.

Contents

The course will examine the main literary, historiographical and theoretical sources necessary for the study of art in Italy from the fourteenth to the nineteenth century, with particular regard to the genre of artist biography and theoretical and methodological texts for the study of works of art. The second part of the course will be devoted to the main figures of European scholars active between the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, and their different critical and methodological approaches (from archival research to attribution, from formal reading of the work of art to content analysis).
