Syllabus

Course Objectives

Students attending this course will learn about the psychological mechanisms subserving human behavior, with a focus on the current debate on the scientific bases of Psychology. At the end of this course, students will understand and be able to apply principles of the scientific method and critical thinking.

Course Prerequisites

There is not strict requirement to attend the course.

Teaching Methods

The classes will offer an overview of the contents of this course and will also be the ideal occasion for answering to the students’ questions and curiosities. There will also be dedicated time for discussing the most important and interesting theoretical and methodological aspects. The course will be conducted through in-person lectures. For each credit (25 hours), the following are planned: -6 hours of delivery-based teaching (DE) (content presentation through slides, scientific papers, and videos); -2 hours of interactive teaching (DI) (guided exercises, small group critiques on topics provided by the instructor); - 17 hours of self-study on the course bibliography and provided slides. Meetings with the tutor for monitoring and self-assessment of the acquired knowledge are scheduled. To facilitate inclusive teaching, the instructor offers up to two hours per week of office hours, by appointment.

Assessment Methods

The final assessment will consist of a series of open questions (the exam will be in the written modality). Specifically, the exam consists of 4 open-ended questions evaluated according to the criteria of comprehensiveness, relevance, and clarity, with a maximum score of 8 points. For the academic year 2025/2026, the exam will solely cover the required text.

Contents

The course will be focused on: - attentional processes and consciousness; - perception; - most popular models of human memory; - processes subserving human learning; - intelligence; - motivation and emotion; - human communication; - personality traits. The contents of the General Psychology course will be addressed considering the ethical and deontological principles, which, depending on the specific topic, will be described in detail by the instructor, both from a theoretical point of view and with a direct connection to practical activities (e.g., through the discussion of illustrative cases). The contents and materials of the course are present and downloadable from the KIRO platform. Students will also be able to find the main slides used for teaching on the KIRO platform. The study program does not differentiate between attending and non-attending students. However, due to the plurality of contents and the work in the classroom, presence is highly recommended.

In order to promote inclusion, up to 2 hours of weekly reception hours will be offered (to be agreed upon with the Professor).
