Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (22/09/2025 - 09/01/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to: provide students with the basic sociological vocabulary and the key concepts necessary to understand social reality; illustrate how, through different theoretical perspectives, social phenomena and the distinctive features of a given social context can be interpreted; and analyze the fundamental processes and institutions of contemporary society.

Course Prerequisites

Nessuno

Teaching Methods

Lectures will be conducted in an interactive manner, with simulations and exercises designed to enhance students’ understanding of the concepts discussed. Active participation through questions, answers, comments, and contributions to the class will therefore be encouraged.
The lectures will combine references to examples drawn from everyday life, history, and the findings of social research with the presentation of concepts, models, and theories from sociology and other social sciences.
In the first lecture, the course objectives, participation requirements, final assessment model, and activity schedule will be presented. In the final lecture, besides summing up the course and drawing some conclusions, students will evaluate both the content and the teaching methods of the course.
To prepare for the exam, students will have access to various resources: a textbook, any additional readings suggested by the instructor, and a range of supporting teaching materials such as slides, handouts, and more.
Study materials, readings, and bibliographic references will be made available on the KIRO page dedicated to the course. The KIRO e-learning platform and its use will be introduced during one of the first lectures, with the collaboration of the staff from the University’s Teaching Innovation and Digital Communication Service (https://idcd.unipv.it/).
The combination of different teaching activities—lectures, readings, discussions, and examinations—is aimed at achieving the learning objectives of the course.

Assessment Methods

Student learning will be assessed through a written exam. The exam consists of two parts: a multiple-choice test and a short essay in response to one question selected from those proposed by the instructor. The exam lasts one and a half hours. The final grade, expressed on a scale of thirty, is calculated on the basis of the scores obtained in the two parts, which carry equal weight.
