Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with knowledge of the most relevant thematic and applicative areas of hospital/ health psychology.
Secondary objective isto introduce students into the practical application of concepts and methods learned.
In particular, the course is aimed at students interested in acquiring accurate and rigorous knowledge to intervene in the context of individuals and community, with particular regards to health care systems and adults.
Expected learning outcomes.
At the end of the course students will be able to:
a) know the main areas of intervention in health psychology
b) know what the main psychological factors and mechanisms are that determine the implementation of health behaviors
c) know the main emotional needs of patients and health care professionals in the hospital context
d) know and identify psychological assessment and intervention tools to support patients with organic pathologies

Course Prerequisites

No specific requirements are required to attend the course.

Teaching Methods

The course takes place through in-person lessons.
For each CFU (20 hours) is expected
4 hours of teaching in DE delivery mode, i.e frontal teaching (content presentation via slides, scientific papers and videos)
2 hours of interactive teaching - DI (guided exercises, small group work between peers, role-play, critical discussion in a small group on topics provided by the teacher)
14 hours of self-study on the texts of the course bibliography, on the slides provided and on the scientific articles indicated
In accordance with the University Guidelines on the teaching delivery methods in the academic year. 2023/2024, the course takes place through lessons that can be attended in person on scheduled dates and times and includes the possibility of consulting the slides or other teaching material from the KIRO university platform.

Assessment Methods

Written exam with 6 open questions lasting 1 hour. The final evaluation is based on the degree of study and understanding of the topics presented and on the ability to integrate the knowledge acquired during the course.
Specifically, each answer will be evaluated with a score of 0-5 and the sum of the six answers will provide the final exam grade.
Even though you have the freedom to renounce a positive evaluation given, it is advisable not to refuse the vote more than once. In the case of refusal of a positive evaluation and a subsequent evaluation, the last evaluation obtained is required to be considered.

The exam will focus on the following 2 books:

- C.A. Ripamonti (2015) Manuale di psicologia della salute. Il Mulino
The teacher during the course will provide indications on any scientific articles / in-depth material.

• Cognitive and emotional variables as modulators of health related behaviors
• Fields of intervention of the psychologist in the hospital context
• The disease and illness beliefs
• Doctor-patient communication
• Caregiver and family context
- Perinatal mental health
• Stress and coping strategies
• Burnout in healthcare professionals
• Introduction of psychoncology
• Palliative Care and End-of-Life
The contents of the course will be addressed taking into consideration the ethical-deontological principles which, based on the specific theme of emotional and social development within the various educational agencies, will be described in detail by the teacher, both from a theoretical point of view and with a direct connection to practical activity (e.g. through the discussion of example cases)
