The aim of the course is to provide some basic concepts and methodological tools in the field of bioimages and image processing techniques.

Written test also with computer exercises using the software used during the course.
The final outcome for the students is an eligibility, with the exception of students enrolled also at the IUSS of Pavia who will obtain a grade on a scale with a maximum of 30/30.

The main topics presented during the course are here briefly reported: - Historical introduction and classification of bioimages. Psychophysics and image perception. - Imaging systems characterization. Sampling of an image. - Digital image processing: point operators, image enhancement and contrast improvement, histogram stretching and equalization, image binarization; local operators, filters, edge detection; binary images, discrete geometry and shape detection with the Hough Transform; mathematical morphology operators; segmentation. During the course, several image processing examples using the ImageJ software will be shown.
