Syllabus
Course Objectives
Diseases of endocrine system: The Course is aimed at providing the students with the main notions regarding pathophysiology and clinics of the diseases of the endocrine system. The subject of endocrine diseases will be treated taking into account their repercussions in Internal Medicine and giving a particular emphasis to their multidisciplinary aspects. Paradigmatic clinical cases will be illustrated. Clinical practice, both in the outpatients clinic and in the ward, is encouraged.
Diseases of metabolism: The Course is aimed at providing students with the main notions regarding pathophysiology and clinics of the Diseases of Metabolism. Particular emphasis will be given to methodological aspects, which are useful to attain a clinical diagnosis.
Endocrine surgery: The main topics of the course will be: 1) anatomy and physiology of endocrine glands; 2) notions regarding etiology, gross and microscopic pathology, signs and symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of the those diseases of the Endocrine System and of Metabolism, which are currently considered of surgical interest. Paradigmatic clinical cases will be illustrated and discussed
At the end of the integrated course of Diseases of the Endocrine System and Metabolism the student:
1. should know the endocrine-metabolic pathophysiology and know how to identify the clinical manifestations of the main pathologies
2. should have acquired the fundamental knowledge for instrumental and laboratory diagnostics related to the above diseases

Course Prerequisites
No preparatory exams are required. However, students must possess or acquire a proper preparation in physiology, medical semeiotics and pathology
Teaching Methods
The Course is divided in three modules, diseases of endocrine system, diseases of metabolism and endocrine surgery and includes frontal teaching activities and clinical practice in the outpatients and inpatients endocrine-metabolic clinics. The teachers are available, in the schedule of reception, for explanations on the matters treated at lesson
Assessment Methods
The exam is oral for the modules of diseases of endocrine system, diseases of metabolism. It is written (30 multiple choice in a 30 minutes test) for endocrine surgery. The final grade will be calculated according to the credits of each module. During the exam the skill achieved and the learning objectives in each module, as well as the appropriate scientific dictionary will be evaluated .
