Practical integration to classroom teaching. Understanding of the methodologies underlying microbiological diagnostics in the clinical setting: identification of bacterial species and execution/interpretation of the antibiogram. Raising awareness of the correct use of antibiotics.
Course Prerequisites
Attendance at Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology lessons. Expression of interst and registration for the University Tutoring Project (via email sent to the course teachers).
Teaching Methods
- tutoring activities at the Teaching Laboratory of the Microbiology Unit of the SCCDP Department. Shifts of 12 students each; - Practical Laboratory activity

Contents
- Use of rich, selective/differential and chromogenic culture media for presumptive identification of bacterial species. - Use of the optical microscope to appreciate the shape/arrangement of bacterial cells after Gram staining. - Preparation of bacterial suspensions with standardized inoculum for the preparation of the antibiogram (EUCAST guidelines and breakpoints , 2024) - Bacterial cultural methods.
