Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (01/09/2025 - 16/01/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

o Knowledge and understanding: at the end of the course the student will be able to understand what characteristics of the tissues are depicted by every imaging modality.
o Applied knowledge and understanding: at the end of the course the student will be able to apply the knowledge acquired to select the imaging modality more effectively depicting specific tissue and components of pathological processes (e.g. fat and liver steatosis). The student will be able to identify a medical image as being a X-ray, a CT, an MR or an ultrasound.
o Judgment autonomy: at the end of the course the student will be able to critically evaluate the downside of the different imaging modalities by analyzing the contraindications in specific subset of subjects.
o Communication skills: at the end of the course the student will be able to communicate to the patient, in a simple and understandable manner, how the energy applied to his body will contribute to create medical images able to identify pathological processes in his body.
o Ability to learn: at the end of the course the student will be able to learn the different appearance of several pathological processes on the different imaging modalities by applying the basic concepts acquired throughout the course.

Course Prerequisites

As pre-requisites there are the subjects of the medical physics course with specific regards to electromagnetic radiations and their properties and of the human genetics course with specific regards to somatic and germinal mutations.

Teaching Methods

The teaching is based on lectures enriched by simple radiological cases discussion. Power Point presentations are used to carry out the lectures.

Assessment Methods

o The exam can only be taken by those who have attended at least 75% of the lesson hours.
o Written examination on kiro testing platform, in presence (multimedia classrooms): multiple choice questions (4 different choices only one correct). No penalization for wrong answers. 12 questions. 30 minutes of duration. Evaluation scale 0-30 (with laude). No materials are needed for the exam. The results will be communicated automatically after the exam and then published on esse3 (where acceptance/refusal can be performed by the student).
