The course of Medical Oncology aims to provide the student with the essential notions to understand: - the impact of this disease on the population and on the health system, - the main notions of the diagnostic and therapeutic workup of cancer patients - signs and symptoms of the main solid tumors at the onset of the disease and during their natural history. - the main therapeutic approaches (active therapies and supportive measures) and their side effects in the short and long term, - the importance of multidisciplinarity in oncology and doctor patient/caregiver communication
Course Prerequisites
Understanding the topics covered in the Oncology module requires the student to have in-depth knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, general biology / pathology with particular attention to the structure of the cell and the mechanisms that regulate normal and pathological growth including immunological mechanisms. They must also possess the fundamentals of internal medicine and semeiotics (clinical and radiological) and general concepts of genetics, medical statistics, epidemiology, pharmacology.
Teaching Methods
Lectures, clinical case discussion The interactive teaching activity will take place in small groups and will be guided by a tutor. It will consist of learning clinical practice and discussion of clinical cases.

Contents
Pathogenetic basis, epidemiology and primary and secondary cancer prevention. Diagnostic procedure in the subject with suspected neoplasia (anamnesis, physical examination, instrumental and laboratory investigations). Approach to the patient diagnosed with cancer: - Staging of the disease for prognostic and therapeutic purposes. - Multidisciplinary approach to the cancer patient: tumor board, PDTA, - Basic concepts of cancer treatment: systemic therapy (chemotherapy, target therapies, immunotherapy) and loco-regional approaches. - Main acute and late side effects of cancer treatments and how to deal with them. - Diagnosis, therapy and follow-up of specific oncological pathologies, particularly those with higher incidence. - Complementary therapies, palliative care; concepts of "simultaneous care" and nutritional support in oncology.
