- Understanding the general aims of occupational medicine and the role of the occupational physician. - Acquisition of interdisciplinary skills in order to understand how the pathologies and disorders of the patient under treatment can be influenced, associated or amplified by the working environment and the specific conditions of the workplace. - Exploration of the connections between the health of the worker and the various factors present in the professional environment, in order to identify possible risks and formulate preventive strategies. - Development of practical skills in the early recognition of potential problems related to employment, thus contributing to promoting safer and healthier working environments.
Course Prerequisites
The course is aimed primarily at students starting from the fourth year of Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery. Students are required to have knowledge of the fundamental concepts of human physiopathology, in particular respiratory and cardiocirculatory, and a basic knowledge of human carcinogenesis.
Teaching Methods
Lectures supported by the projection of power point slides. The course is structured in four lectures, each lasting two hours and conducted by teachers and medical professionals who are experts in the specific field covered.
Assessment Methods
Progress will be assessed by considering attendance at lectures and participation in discussion activities organised during the course.
Texts
The course is mainly based on the teaching material (slides and handouts) provided by the teachers. In addition, during the lessons, further references to scientific publications and INAIL Guidelines relevant to the topics covered will be indicated. As a systematic reference text for the course topics, we recommend: "Manuale di Medicina del Lavoro", Piccin, 2018.

>Meeting 1: Basics of Occupational Medicine and medico-legal aspects. Definition and purposes of occupational medicine; Fundamental principles of safety at work; Relationship between occupational medicine and legal medicine; Role of the occupational physician in legal contexts.
>Meeting 2: The patient of working age - Focus on cardio-metabolic aspects. Profile of the professionally active internist patient; Identification of cardio-metabolic risks associated with work; Case studies and discussion.
>Meeting 3: The patient of working age - Focus on pneumological and allergological aspects Environmental exposures and occupational risks for the respiratory system; Evaluation of working conditions that can affect respiratory health; Relationship between allergology, pulmonology and occupational medicine; Approach to the patient with occupational asthma.
>Meeting 4: Malignant neoplasms and work Carcinogenesis and the work environment; Identification of the main carcinogens in the workplace; In-depth analysis of the relationship between occupational medicine and oncology; Prevention and monitoring strategies; Clinical case study of patients with cancers related to the work environment; Diagnostic and therapeutic approach to patients with cancers of occupational origin
