Dementia affects approximately 46 million people worldwide. The most recent results of research on Alzheimer's disease will be presented and an attempt will be made to help those approaching the world of dementia for the first time to understand the new advances in knowledge of the disease The objectives of the course are to offer clinical biochemical knowledge underlying cognitive deficits and Alzheimer's disease and to give students clinical and instrumental skills for the good recognition and management of the symptoms and needs of patients and family members and caregivers.

Course Prerequisites

The course is limited to 198 places and is offered to sixth year students Required basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry. We suggest to attend the Communication and Geriatric emergency medicine Courses.

With the contribution of teachers and researchers in a variety of fields, operating in the universities and IRCCS of Pavia and around the world, they will present the most recent results of research on Alzheimer's disease, a neurodegenerative disease that causes a decline in memory and other important functions mental. An enormous effort is needed, both to identify the pathogenetic mechanisms underlying the disease and to evaluate new therapeutic approaches still under study today. The teachers of this course, well known in the scientific, clinical and academic world, have all the characteristics and expertise to help both experts and those approaching the world of dementia for the first time to understand the new advances in knowledge of the disease that they have produced over the last few years of research and the new approaches that derive from their research. Their relationships will be very useful for students, professionals and family members of Alzheimer's patients to see with new eyes this disease which never only affects one patient but destroys an entire family in the true sense of the word. The program includes 1) update on the most recent acquisitions in terms of pathogenesis 2) detailed excursus on the various clinical pictures 3) discussion of clinical cases 4) pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies 6) correlation with comorbidity and polypharmacy 6) management of pathological manifestations of the disease 7) the stages of the disease, symptoms, causes, diagnoses, treatments, and 8) how to manage the daily life of those affected by it. 9) The topic of rehabilitation activities, such as art therapy and music therapy, which can improve patients' quality of life, can also be explored further. Here's a more detailed breakdown: I. Understanding Alzheimer's Disease: Normal Aging vs. Alzheimer's: Distinguishing between typical age-related cognitive changes and the onset of Alzheimer's disease. Types of Dementia: Exploring various forms of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. Physiology of Alzheimer's: Understanding the biological changes in the brain caused by the disease. Diagnosis: Learning about the diagnostic process for Alzheimer's and related dementias. Stages of Dementia: Identifying the different stages of dementia and the associated symptoms. II. Care and Management: Communication Strategies: Developing effective communication techniques for interacting with individuals with dementia. Activities of Daily Living: Assisting individuals with dementia in performing daily tasks like eating, bathing, and dressing. Behavioral Management: Addressing challenging behaviors that may arise during the course of the disease. Medication Management: Understanding the medications used to manage symptoms of Alzheimer's. Nutritional Needs: Ensuring proper nutrition and managing eating difficulties. Creating Supportive Environments: Modifying living spaces to promote safety and well-being.
