Syllabus

Obiettivi Formativi

The course aims to provide students with a solid understanding of the fundamental concepts governing the structure, properties, processing, and applications of biomaterials and nanomaterials.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
• demonstrate knowledge of the fundamental principles underlying the design, synthesis, properties, and performance of biomaterials and nanomaterials.
• identify the relationships between material structure, processing, properties and applications.
• critically evaluate the suitability of different classes of biomaterials for specific biological applications, considering their advantages, limitations, and performance.

Prerequisiti

Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of general chemistry
and physical chemistry.

Oral examination aimed at evaluating the student's understanding of the fundamental principles governing the structure, properties, processing, and applications of biomaterials and nanomaterials.

Testi

There is not a standard textbook.
The lecture slides are available to the students. The teachers provide
references to the relevant review papers of the current scientific
literature.

The course provides an introduction to the fundamental concepts of bio and nanomaterials, focusing on the relationship between structure, properties, processing and applications. The course will cover the following topics:
• Introduction to biomaterials
• Crystal structure and defects
• From bulk materials to nanomaterials
• Materials synthesis
• Phase diagrams and polymorphism
• Glasses and amorphous materials
• Magnetic materials
• Corrosion and degradation of biomaterials
• Mechanical properties of materials
• Properties of composite materials
